Title I
Information from the Bellaire High School Title I Office
A message from Bellaire’s Title I Coordinator, David Thornhill
Title I is a federally-funded program. The purpose is to ensure that all children, particularly low-achieving children in the highest-poverty schools, have a fair, equal, and significant opportunity to obtain a high-quality education and reach, at a minimum, proficiency on challenging State academic achievement standards and State academic assessments. This is Bellaire’s second year as a Title I school-wide program. Although Bellaire is not a high-poverty school, we qualified as a Title I school based on the percentage of students on free/reduced lunch in our entire feeder pattern.
The intent of Title I is to use funds to supplement, not supplant; to provide extra services, instructional materials, etc., not core requirements. Bellaire’s Title I program provides funding for additional staff; one 12 month Social Worker and one 11 month counselor. As Title I Coordinator I work with teachers and staff to provide interventions to those students who need additional help in passing the TAKS. Parental Involvement is another big part of Title I. I will work with Ms. Rubin in getting some of our lesser-involved parents to attend parent meetings. I will be teaching ESL classes for our non-English speaking parents.
If you have any questions about Title I please stop by my office in the library.
